Dear Pen Pal,
Hi! My name is Xiaoming and I'm 8 years old. I live in a really
cool place called Zhangjiajie in Hunan Province, China. It's
famous for having some of the craziest looking mountains and
landscapes you've ever seen! I want to tell you all about my
awesome hometown.
First of all, the mountains here are just totally insane. They
have these massive pillars of rock that shoot straight up into the
sky, with flat tops kind of like trees without branches. Except
they're made of solid stone! Some of them are over 200 meters
tall. Can you imagine a rock as big as a skyscraper?? The really
weird thing is, the tops are flat and you can actually walk around
up there. There are little trails connecting the tops of different
pillars together, kind of like rock bridges high up in the air. It's
crazy!
My dad took me hiking up one of the biggest pillars once. It
was kind of scary because the trails are really narrow and there's
just drops of hundreds of meters on each side. But the view from
the top was amazing. You could see the whole valley stretching
out below you, with more giant pillars poking up all over the
place. It's like a rock forest or something. The pillars have carved
into them over millions of years by wind, rain and ice. Some of
them have grooves running along the sides that make them look
kind of like towering green beans!
Another really cool thing in Zhangjiajie is the forests. We
have tons of different trees and plants that are so old and huge.
Some of the trees are thousands of years old! The roots come up
out of the ground and twist around in these crazy patterns that
make them look like giant artworks. My favorite tree is called the
"Nine Horse Pine Tree" because its roots and trunk look like nine
horses galloping along. For real, it's just like nine horses were
frozen in wood while they were running! There are also trees with
roots that grow up in the air instead of under the ground. They
make these cool arches and walkways that people can hike under.
It's like the trees are building tents for you to camp inside.
One part of the forest is filled with bamboo that
